Purpose
- Assess the endurance of the deep neck flexors
- Deep Neck Flexors: Rectus Capitis Anterior, Rectus Capitis Lateralis, Longus Capitis, Longus Colli
Description
- Patient is supine, knees bent and feet on table
- Patient tucks chin to chest, lifts head off table 1 inch
- Evaluate for substitution of platysma or sternocleidomastoid muscle
- Assess length of time patient can hold neck
- Normal: Men (38.9 seconds), Women (29.4 seconds)
- Abnormal: less than 21.4 seconds
Modification
- Have patient tuck neck and raise off table
- Draw 1 cm line along the wrinkles of the neck from anterior to posterior
- Measure time to failure
- When the line separates along the wrinkles, the DNF have fatigued
Pathology
- Decreased Neck Flexor Endurance associated with head posture dysfunction
