Palmar Interossei

Structure

  • Four muscles
  • Located on the palmar surface of the hand

Origin

  • Interosseous muscle I
  • Interosseous muscle II
    • Ulnar surface of entire length of 2nd metacarpal
  • Interosseous muscle III
    • Radial surface of 4th metacarpal
  • Interosseous muscle IV
    • Radial surface of 5th metacarpal

Insertion

  • Interosseous muscle I
    • Sesamoid bone on the ulnar aspect of the proximal phalanx of digit 1
    • Extensor expansion
  • Interosseous muscle II
    • Ipsilateral extensor expansion of digit 2
  • Interosseous muscle III
    • Radial aspect of the base of the proximal phalanx of digit 4
    • Extensor expansion
  • Interosseous muscle IV
    • Radial aspect of the base of the proximal phalanx of digit 5
    • Extensor expansion

Actions

  • Flexion and adduction of digits 2, 4, & 5 at the metacarpophalangeal joints
  • Extension of digits 2, 4, & 5 at the interphalangeal joints
  • Assist in flexion of the metacarpophalangeal joints
  • Assist in extension of the proximal and distal interphalangeal joints

Vascular Supply

  • Anterior and Posterior Digital Arteries
  • Deep Palmar Arch
  • Princeps Pollicis Artery
  • Radialis Indicis Artery
  • Palmar Metacarpal Arteries
  • Proximal and Distal Perforating Arteries
  • Common and Proper Palmar Arteries
