  • Extension Rotation Test

Purpose


Description

  • The patient is supine
  • Head hangs off the table in examiners hands
  • Examiner helps patient rotated head to affected side and holds position for 10 seconds
  • The patient is returned to neutral for 10 seconds
  • The head is then extended and rotated to the affected side for 10 seconds
  • Repeat testing on unaffected side
  • Positive test is reproduction of symptoms including:
    • dizziness, diplopia, dysarthria, dysphagia, drop attacks, nausea and vomiting, sensory changes, nystagmus

Pathology

  • Vertebrobasilar Insufficiency (VBI)
