Wartenbergs Sign

Purpose

  • A sign suggesting neuropathy of the palmer interosseus muscle

Description

  • The patient is seated or standing
  • Examiner evaluates affected hand
  • A positive sign is
    • Slightly greater abduction of the fifth digit, due to paralysis of the abducting palmar interosseous muscle
    • There is also unopposed action of the radial innervated extensor muscles (digiti minimi, digitorum communis )
