Name
- Os Subfibulare
General
- Accessory ossicle that lies at the tip of the lateral malleolus of the ankle joint
- Rarely reported in the literature
- One of the accessory bones of the foot and ankle
Clinical Presentation
- Typically asymptomatic and incidental finding
- Can cause pain or degenerative changes
Etiology
- Theory 1: avulsion fracture attributable to the anterior talofibular ligament
- Theory 2: unfused secondary ossification center
- Generally thought to be post-traumatic rather than congenital[3]
