- distinctly different from arthritis
- cartilage defects without bone involved are often unrepairable
- candidate for arthroscopic cartilage removal
- now exposed bone should be approached for cartilage growth stimulation
- younger patients without bone defect are candidates for microfracture technique
- Tunnels made arthroscopically into bone to marrow in aims of accessing stem cells for them to migrate to bone surface and coat where cartilage is lost.
