Description
What It Is
- A semi-rigid ankle brace designed to support and stabilize the ankle after injuries
- Typically made with two contoured plastic shells connected by an adjustable strap system
- Contains air-filled cells (“Air-Stirrup” design) for cushioning and controlled compression
- Commonly used after Grade I–II ankle sprains and during the transition from acute injury to functional rehabilitation
How It Works
- The rigid side shells limit excessive inversion and eversion, helping prevent re-injury
- Air bladders provide gentle compression to reduce swelling and improve comfort
- Allows functional movement in plantarflexion and dorsiflexion, promoting early mobility and faster recovery
- Can be worn inside most athletic shoes, allowing protected weight-bearing
- Helps maintain proper alignment of the ankle joint during walking and activity
Evidence
