Purpose

  • Vascular examination used to assess lower extremity arterial perfusion
  • Leo Buerger first described Buerger's Test in 1924[2]

Description

  • Patient is supine
  • Elevate both legs to 45–90° for 1–2 minutes
  • Observe for pallor
  • Lower the legs to a dependent position
  • Observe for return of color and dependent rubor
  • Positive Test
    • Elevation pallor
    • Dependent rubor
    • Delayed return of normal color
    • Delayed venous filling

Pathology

  • Peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
  • Chronic limb ischemia
  • Lower extremity arterial insufficiency
  • Atherosclerotic occlusive disease
  • Critical limb-threatening ischemia
