Curriculum

  • Overview: The Christus Santa Rosa Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship is a one-year program designed to provide comprehensive training in sports medicine for primary care physicians. The curriculum includes clinical rotations, didactic sessions, and community engagement, focusing on the care of athletes and active individuals of all ages.
  • Goals and Objectives:
    • Develop the ability to diagnose and manage acute and chronic sports-related injuries and medical conditions.
    • Gain proficiency in sports medicine-related procedures such as joint injections, ultrasound-guided interventions, and fracture management.
    • Work effectively with orthopedic surgeons, physical therapists, athletic trainers, and other healthcare professionals.
    • Engage in research projects and contribute to the field of sports medicine through presentations.
    • Participate in local sporting events and provide medical coverage, promoting health and safety in the community.
  • Clinical Rotations:
    • Continuity Clinic: Diagnosis and management of acute and chronic conditions in respective speciality.
    • Primary Care Sports Medicine Clinic: Diagnosis and management of acute and chronic sports injuries, Pre-participation physical examinations, Concussion management and return-to-play protocols.
    • Orthopedic Sports Medicine: Post-operative care and rehabilitation, Joint preservation and replacement criteria, Ligament reconstruction options
    • Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation: Understanding rehabilitation protocols, Hands-on experience with physical therapy techniques, Collaboration with physical therapists
    • Bone Clinic: Diagnosis and management of Osteoporosis.
    • Radiology: Interpretation of musculoskeletal imaging (X-rays, MRI, CT, Ultrasound), Ultrasound-guided procedures
    • Didactic Sessions: Weekly Sports Medicine Didactics with Case presentations, Journal clubs, and Guest lectures from experts in sports medicine. Skills Workshops include Ultrasound-guided injection techniques, along with Casting and splinting workshops
  • Research:
    • Research Project: Fellows are required to complete a research project by the end of the fellowship, with opportunities to present at national conferences.
    • Evidence-Based Medicine: Regular sessions on critical appraisal of sports medicine literature and incorporation of evidence-based practices into clinical care.
  • Community Engagement:
    • Event Coverage: Provide medical coverage for local high school and college sports events, marathons, rodeos, and other community sporting events.

  • Monday: 1/2 day Continuity Clinic, 1/2 day with Orthopedic Surgeon
  • Tuesday: 1/2 day Ortho Hand, 1/2 day College Training Room
  • Wednesday: Elective (Radiology, Ortho Foot/Ankle, Resident Injection Clinic, PT)
  • Thursday: 1/2 day Ortho Sports Med, 1/2 day PCSM w/ injection clinic
  • Friday: 1/2 day PCSM w/ injection clinic, 1/2 day didactics
  • Saturday: Sports Medicine Clinic
