Corkscrew Test

  • Corkscrew Test
  • Kibler's Corkscrew test

Purpose

  • Evaluate for stability of the lower limb and trunk

Description

  • Ask the patient to stand on the limb being evaluated
  • The contralateral leg is lifted off the ground
  • Ask them to rotate the weight-bearing hip
  • First into maximal hip internal rotation
  • Then external rotation
  • Returns to the start position in less than 6 seconds
  • Abnormal test
    • Twisting or 'corkscrewing' at the knee/ hip
    • Compare to the unaffected side
    • Dysfunction more commonly seen on the contralateral leg to the throwing shoulder

Pathology

  • Lower limb and trunk instability
