Edens Test

Purpose
- To evaluate for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
- This test was first described in service members who wore a heavy ruck sack for a long period of time
Description
- Patient is standing, examiner behind patient
- Examiner palpates radial pulse and applies downward traction at the shoulder
- Simultaneously, the patient "stands at attention", engaging their chest
- Positive Test:
- Change in pulse intensity
- Increase in neurological symptoms on affected side
Modification
- The patient is seated
- The patient is asked to retract shoulders posteriorly, depress shoulders inferiorly
- Patient then 'protrudes' chest anteriorly for up to 1 minute
- Examiner palpates radial pulse of affected limb
- Positive test
- Reduction or obliteration of radial pulse due
- Worsening symptoms
