Dix Hallpike Maneuver

Purpose

  • Attempt to reproduce symptoms in patients with suspected peripheral vertigo

Description

  • Ask the patient to sit upright on the examining coach
  • Turn the patient’s head 45 degrees to one side
  • Lie back rapidly with her/his head extended over the end of the bed (keep eyes open)
  • Watch eyes for nystagmus
  • Repeat the test, turning the head to other side

Pathology

  • Peripheral Vertigo
  • Benign Paroxysmal Peripherals Vertigo
