Purpose

  • Determine the postoperative swelling of the operated joint preoperatively and at 24 and 48 h postoperatively
  • Describes an examination technique for determining the circumference of the upper ankle joint

Description

  • The ankle is held in a neutral position at approximately 90°
  • Tape measure is placed around the 20° flexed upper ankle joint in a figure of eight
  • Record the measurement and compare to the unaffected limb
  • Positive test
    • Measurement is greater in the affected limb than unaffected limb

Pathology

  • Postoperative ankle swelling/edema
