Description

The genioglossus along with the hypoglossal nerve and some of its innervations[1]

Name

  • Genioglossus
  • Genioglossus muscle
  • Musculus genioglossus

General

Origin

  • Superior mental spine of mandible

Insertion

  • Entire length of dorsum of tongue/lingual aponeurosis, body of hyoid bone

Function

  • Bilaterally: Depress and protrude tongue
  • Unilaterally: Contralaterally deviate tongue

Vascular Supply

  • Branches of:
    • Lingual artery
    • Facial artery

Innervation
