General

  • Ibutamoren is a growth hormone secretagogue that is commonly used to increase endogenous growth hormone and IGF-1 levels.

Performance Enhancing Effects

  • has been shown to increase IGF-1 levels but available clinical studies have not demonstrated meaningful improvements in functional or performance outcomes relevant to athletes.
  • In a study involving elderly recovering from hip fracture, ibutamoren has been shown to mildly increase gait speed but did not significantly improve most objective measures of physical function, such as stair climbing power.
  • has been show to increase muscle mass (fat-free mass/lean body mass) in adults, but there is no consistent evidence that this translates into improved muscle strength or function.

Medical Indications

  • No current medical indications

Adverse Effects

  • Clinical trials were terminated early due to a safety signal for congestive heart failure
  • Most common adverse effects include increased appetite, edema, musculoskeletal pain, and impaired glucose tolerance
