Purpose


Description

  • Palpate the Achilles tendon and find tenderness with the knee extended
  • Then flex the knee to 90 degrees
  • Palpate the tender portion again
  • Positive Test
    • Reduction/absence of pain in flexion

Alternative Description

  • Once the pain is localized, ask the patient to dorsiflex the ankle
  • They should then actively plantarflex and dorsiflex
  • Positive test
    • Pain is worse when tenderness is palpated again
