Name

  • Manubriosternal joint
  • Manubriosternal angle
  • Angle of Louis

General

  • Secondary cartilaginous joint between two parts of the sternum: the manubrium and the body
  • Formed by two irregular articular facets on the inferior manubrium/ superior sternal body
  • Between them, a fibrocartilage disc exists that ossifies with age

Action

  • Allows a small among of angulation in longitudinal axis
  • Slightly increases anterior-posterior diameter of the thorax during inspiration

Ligaments

  • Manubriosternal ligament
