Curriculum
- Didactic Training: A Sports Medicine Conference is held weekly during which key topics in sports medicine are reviewed. In addition, many weekly conference opportunities are available in PMR, physical therapy, orthopedics, spine and beyond.
- Ultrasound Curriculum: Weekly Hands-on Musculoskeletal Ultrasound Conferences is held in our state-of-the-art multidisciplinary simulation center. The curriculum includes conferences, hands on practice and procedures workshop with cadavers.
- Sports Coverage:
- You're the assistant team physician for the University of North Florida OspreysOpens in new tab , a Division I university in the Atlantic Sun Conference. As an assistant team physician, you cover a half day in the training room at the school and provide on-field and on-court coverage for soccer, volleyball, basketball, and track and field home games and other events.
- High school. You're the team physician for several local high school football teams, including Sandalwood High School, Fletcher High School, and Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind (FSDB). You engage in sideline coverage for all home football games and manage related injuries; training room coverage as needed.
- You're the team physician for the local football Junior Development League (JDL). With this league, we perform baseline concussion testing and game coverage. This will increase your sports coverage exposure with the pediatric population.
- Professional sports.
- Professional NFL football experience with the Jacksonville Jaguars working with Dr. Maynard who is a Team Physician with the Jags. Opportunities may include training camp coverage, physicals, time with the sports nutrition team and potential game coverage.
- With Dr. Maynard serving as the head Chief Medical Advisor for the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA), you're able to take part in weekly Athlete Care meetings and may join the team for annual physicals at a tournament location.
- Opportunities for professional soccer coverage with the Jacksonville Armada with Dr. Troyer.
- The Mayo sports medicine team also provides coverage for Super Girl Surf Pro, a professional surf competition at our Jacksonville Beach pier.
- Endurance sports. Mayo Clinic sports medicine provides medical coverage for several local events, including several sprint triathlon events, Hammerhead Olympic triathlon, and local marathon planning and coverage.
- Adaptive sports. You're the team physician for the FSDB athletics. You cover home football games as well as the USABA National High School Goalball Championships hosted by FSDB. Partnership with Brooks Rehabilitation and their adaptive sports programs with opportunities to cover wheelchair basketball and rugby tournaments.
- Research: Opportunities for research are endless with the extensive resources of Mayo Clinic. We have excellent published faculty to mentor the fellow with their research interests. Although a 1 year fellowship, fellows have been able to complete the research cycle watching their ideas develop, approved by IRB, study complete and manuscript written. Fellows are also encouraged to submit case abstracts and/or research for presentations at AMSSM and ACSM.
