Purpose

  • To evaluate for appendicitis as a cause of the patients abdominal pain
  • First described by Charles McBurney in 1889[1]

Description

  • Identify the umbilicus and the right ASIS
  • McBurney's point is one third of the way from ASIS to the navel
  • Positive test
    • Pain or tenderness

  • Appendicitis

  • Borner et al[2] and Rastogi et al[3]
    • Sensitivity: 45%
    • Specificity: 50-83%
