Meniscofibular Ligament
Description

Name
- Meniscofibular Ligament (MFibL)
History
- The meniscofibular ligament was first described by S Zivanovic in 1964[3]
General
- Thickening of the posterolateral joint capsule
- It courses from the inferior part of the posterior lateral meniscus to the head of the fibula
- It is adjacent to the meniscotibial ligaments
Gross Anatomy
- Mean length is 19 mm[4]
- Proximal width is 13 mm, distally 8.5 mm
- Thickness ranges from 2.6 to 6.1mm
- Can be associated with morphology of the proximal tibiofibular joint
- Present in 100% of cadaveric studies[5]
Imaging
- Best seen on MRI or arthroscopy
Function
- Probably plays a role in restricting anterior movement of lateral meniscus
- Provides stability to the posterolateral corner of the knee
- Transmits movements from the fibula and ankle to the lateral meniscus
- Believed to have a protective effect during the last stages of knee extension
