- Terminal Digital Nerves of the Hand
General Description
- Terminal branches of the median nerve and ulnar nerve that travel along the palmer aspect
- Median nerve
- Provide sensory innervation to the lateral/radial 3.5 fingers (thumb, index, middle and half of ring)
- Provides motor innervation to lumbrical muscles of index and middle finger
- Ulnar Nerve
- Provide sensory innervation to the medial/ulnar 1.5 fingers (half of ring, pinky finger)
- Provides motor innervation to lumbrical muscles of 4th and 5th digits
Common Digital Nerves
- Common digital nerves are the proximal branches that run in the palm before reaching the fingers.
- They travel toward the web spaces between the digits and typically supply two adjacent fingers.
- At the level of the metacarpal heads or web space, each common digital nerve divides into two branches.
Proper Palmar Digital Nerves
- Terminal branches of the common palmer digital nerves
- Course along the side of each digit
- Median Nerve: Provides sensory to the lateral 3.5 fingers (thumb, index, middle and half of ring)
- Ulnar Nerve: Provide sensory innervation to the medial/ulnar 1.5 fingers (half of ring, pinky finger)
