Description

Normal anatomy of the median and ulnar nerves. DorBUN dorsal branch of ulnar nerve, DBUN deep branch of ulnar nerve; SSBUN superficial sensory branch of ulnar nerve, CDN common digital nerve; PDN proper digital nerve (Green ulnar and Yellow median), RMN recurrent median nerve, PCBM Palmar cutaneous branch of median nerve (colour figure online)[1]

Name

  • Palmar Digital Nerves
  • Common palmar digital nerves of median nerve
  • Common volar digital nerves
  • Proper Palmar Digital Branches of Median Nerve
  • Rami digitales palmares proprii nervi mediani
  • Proper Digital Nerves
  • Digital Nerves of the Fingers

  • Digital Nerves of the Hand
  • Proper Digital Nerves of the Fingers
  • Palmar Nerves of the Fingers
  • Digital Sensory Nerves of the Fingers
  • Terminal Digital Nerves of the Hand

General Description

  • Terminal branches of the median nerve and ulnar nerve that travel along the palmer aspect
  • Median nerve
    • Provide sensory innervation to the lateral/radial 3.5 fingers (thumb, index, middle and half of ring)
    • Provides motor innervation to lumbrical muscles of index and middle finger
  • Ulnar Nerve
    • Provide sensory innervation to the medial/ulnar 1.5 fingers (half of ring, pinky finger)
    • Provides motor innervation to lumbrical muscles of 4th and 5th digits

Common Digital Nerves

  • Common digital nerves are the proximal branches that run in the palm before reaching the fingers.
  • They travel toward the web spaces between the digits and typically supply two adjacent fingers.
  • At the level of the metacarpal heads or web space, each common digital nerve divides into two branches.

Proper Palmar Digital Nerves

  • Terminal branches of the common palmer digital nerves
  • Course along the side of each digit
  • Median Nerve: Provides sensory to the lateral 3.5 fingers (thumb, index, middle and half of ring)
  • Ulnar Nerve: Provide sensory innervation to the medial/ulnar 1.5 fingers (half of ring, pinky finger)
