Indications
- Used to emergently compress the pelvis in the event of a pelvic fracture
- Temporizing measure to control bleeding until definitive care can be established
- It can be applied prehospital by emergency medical services or in the emergency department
Description
- Palpate the greater trochanter of both femurs
- Place the pelvic binder behind the hip at this level
- Bring it around and tighten until desired level of compression is achiveved
- Alternatively, you can use a bed sheet if a commercial pelvic binder is not available
Evidence
- Multiple high-quality guidelines and recent studies support the early use of pelvic binders for suspected or confirmed unstable pelvic ring injuries to reduce pelvic volume, limit hemorrhage, and improve survival[1][2][3]
