- Normally fuses by age 12
- Considered a normal anatomic variant of Axis
- Must be distinguished from odontoid fracture, Os Odontoideum
- Typically an incidental finding, rarely causes symptoms
- One of the accessory bones of the spine
Radiographic features
- Small, well corticated ossicle at the tip of the dens
- Usually midline
- Dens is typically normal height[2]
Clinical Significance
- Typically, incidental/ asymptomatic
