Purpose

  • To evaluate for the presence of a parameniscal cyst when a mass is present on the knee
  • First described by Pisani in 1947[2]

Description

Classic Maneuver

  • Patient is supine
  • The mass is visualized with the knee in full extension
  • Mass disappears when the knee is placed in flexion

Modified Maneuver

  • Note: Proposed for lateral meniscus
  • The patient is supine
  • The knee is held at 45 degrees of flexion
  • Internally and externally rotate the leg
  • Positive test
    • Prominent cyst in external rotation disappears with internal rotation
