Name
- Popliteofibular Ligament
- Ligamentum popliteofibulare
General
- One of the lateral supporting structures of the knee
- One of three primary stabilizers of the posterolateral corner
Gross Anatomy
- Origin: musculocutaneous junction of the popliteus[3]
- Passes inferiorly to insert into the apex of the head of the fibula
- Inserts adjacent to the lateral collateral ligament
- Orientation of the distal fibers are vertical and similar to the LCL
- More proximal fibers are oriented obliquely with the tendon of popliteus
Function
- Import stabilizer of the posterolateral knee
- Resists posterior translation and external rotation of the tibia
Ultrasound Features
- Transducer: high frequency, linear
- Appearance: sheet-like fibrillar band
- Start on the posterior part of fibular head
- Ligament is located just superficial to the hyperechoic cortex of the posterolateral tibia between the popliteus tendon (proximal) and head of fibula (distal)[4]
MRI Features
- Views: oblique coronal, standard coronal, sagittal
- Deep the the inferior lateral genicular vessels
- Easily missed on standard MRI examination
