Purpose

  • To evaluate the hip for signs of FAI/ impingement

Description

  • The patient is in the supine position
  • Patient at edge of table with opposite leg held in flexion
  • Affected side hanging freely in full extension off of table
  • Affected hip then ABER while extended
    • This approximates femoral neck & posterior acetabular wall congruence
  • Positive test
    • Hip pain
    • Anterior instability
    • Apprehension to further external rotation

Alternative Description

  • Patient is in lateral decubitus position
  • Affected hip is upwards
  • Fully extend, abduct and externally rotate the hip
  • Positive test
    • Posterior hip pain
