General

Anatomic Course

  • Arises distal to the flexor retinaculum
  • Curls around it distally to supply the thenar muscles

Variant Anatomy

  • Sub-ligamentous: arises within the carpal tunnel, courses underneath the flexor retinaculum before reaching the thenar muscles
  • Trans-ligamentous: arises within the carpal tunnel, pierces the flexor retinaculum to reach the thenar muscles

Motor Supply: Thenar Eminence
