Stinchfield Test

Purpose

  • Evaluate the etiology of hip pain

Description

  • The patient is supine
  • Examiner asks patient to raise their leg, flexed 20-45° off the table with the knee in extension
  • Examiner applies one hand on the anterior thigh, forcing it back down against the exam table
  • Positive test
    • Anterior hip or groin pain

Modification

  • The test can be performed with the leg in slight external rotation
