Shoe Removal Maneuver

Purpose

Demonstration of the Shoe Removal Maneuver[1]
  • Evaluate the Popliteus muscle as a cause of knee pain

Description

  • Patient instructed to removal contralateral shoe by internally rotated affected leg to reach the contralateral heel
    • Essentially, what you would do to remove the shoe while standing
  • Positive test
    • Reproduction of the patients pain
  • Note: Symptoms are best reproduced by allowing the patient to exercise just prior to physical exam
