Posterior Tibiotalar Ligament
(Redirected from Superficial posterior tibiotalar ligament)
Description
-
Deltoid ligament complex including the posterior tibiotalar ligament[1]
-
The branches of the deltoid ligament of the ankle, including the posterior tibiotalar ligament[2]
-
Normal posterior tibiotalar ligament demonstrated on coronal (A) and axial (B) proton density-weighted MR images. Note the normal multifascicular appearance.[3]
-
Medial view of a caveric ankle showing an intact deep posterior tibiotalar ligament. The superficial and deep anterior deltoid ligament bands are removed.[4]

Other Names
- Superficial Posterior Tibiotalar Ligament
- SPTTL
- Posterior Tibiotalar Ligament of the Deltoid Ligament
- Posterior Tibiotalar Portion of the Deltoid Ligament
- Posterior Deltoid Ligament
- Posterior Tibiotalar Band
- Posteromedial Tibiotalar Ligament
General
- Belongs to the medial supporting structures of the ankle joint
- Considered one of the four superficial components of the deltoid ligament[6]
Gross Anatomy
- Located superficial to the Deep Posterior Tibiotalar Ligament
- Located posterior to the Tibiocalcaneal Ligament
- Runs obliquely and posteriorly from the medial malleolus to the talus[6]
- Tension is increased in dorsiflexion[7]
Attachments
- Origin: adjacent to distal center of intercollicular groove of the medial malleolus.
- Insertion: posteroinferior medial talar body
Anatomic Variants
- Absent in about 20% of patients based on a cadaveric study[6]
