Anatomy
- Runs along the ulnar side of the metacarpophalangeal Joint of the thumb
Proper Collateral Ligament (PCL)
- Origin proximal to the base of the head of the first metacarpal
- Inserts on the volar side of the 1st proximal phalanx
Accessory Collateral Ligament (ACL)
- Origin just palmer to the PCL
- Runs parallel to the PCL and also inserts on the proximal phalanx and volar plate
Function
- Prevents abduction or valgus/ radial deviation of the thumb at the 1st MTPJ
- Ensure the ulnar and volar stability of the base of the thumb
- UCL Proper: tight in flexion, relaxion in extension of MCPJ
- Accessory UCL: tight in in extension, relaxes in flexion
