• Thin flat muscle located on the inner surface of the anterior thoracic wall
• Places a role in forced expiration by depressing the ribs
• Considered one of the accessory muscles of respiration

Origin

• Xiphoid Process (posterior aspect)
• Sternum

Insertion

• Ribs 2-6

Actions

• Expiration (Depresses ribs caudally)

• Anterior Intercostal Arteries

Innervation

• Intercostal Nerves
