Purpose

  • A series of physical exam maneuvers to help evaluate the anterior ankle joint space

Description

  • Evaluate the patient for the following:
    • 1. Anterolateral ankle joint tenderness to palpation
    • 2. Anterolateral ankle joint swelling
    • 3. Pain with forced dorsiflexion & eversion
    • 4. Pain with single leg squat
    • 5. Pain with activity (weight bearing, running, jumping)
    • 6. Absence of ankle instability (normal anterior drawer, talar tilt)
  • Positive test
    • At least 5 of the 6 clinical findings present
