Bragard Sign

Purpose

  • Modification of the straight leg raise test to help determine whether a lumbar radiculopathy is present
  • Positive test reproduction of sciatica neuropathic symptoms due to increased neural tension
  • Helps differentiate neural tension from hamstring or gastroc muscle tightness

History

  • First described by Karla Bragard (1890-1983), a German Orthopedist (need citation)

Description

  • The patient is supine
  • With their knee extended, flex their hip up to the point of discomfort or pain
  • Then passively dorsiflex the ankle
  • Positive test
    • Increase in pain
