Purpose
- Modification of the straight leg raise test to help determine whether a lumbar radiculopathy is present
- Positive test reproduction of sciatica neuropathic symptoms due to increased neural tension
- Helps differentiate neural tension from hamstring or gastroc muscle tightness
History
- First described by Karla Bragard (1890-1983), a German Orthopedist (need citation)
Description
- The patient is supine
- With their knee extended, flex their hip up to the point of discomfort or pain
- Then passively dorsiflex the ankle
- Positive test
- Increase in pain
