Purpose

  • Apply compression to Median Nerve to evaluate as etiology patients symptoms

Description

  • Patient is seated or standing
  • Apply sufficient pressure over the carpal tunnel to cause skin blanching (≥30 sec)
  • Positive test:
    • Recreation of pain or paresthesias

Modified Durkan's

  • Involves the use of equipment
    • Firm plastic board (7 × 11 cm) with a central round-edged rectangular piece (3 × 6 cm)
    • Sized to cover the volar wrist and apply pressure over the median nerve beneath the flexor retinaculum
    • Incorporated into a blood pressure cuff, linked to a mercurial sphygmomanometer
  • Inflate the blood pressure cuff to 150 mm Hg for 30 seconds
  • Positive test
    • Reproduction of symptoms
