Extensor Expansion of Foot
Description

Name
- Extensor Expansion of the Foot
- Extensor Hood
- Extensor Hood Apparatus
- Aponeurosis Extensoria Pedis
General
- Runs across the dorsal surface of each toe
- Extensor tendons become incorporated into a fascial expansion
Proximal Aspect
- Sometimes called transverse lamina or extensor sling[3]
- Fibrous sheath that encloses several tendons as they pass across the metatarsophalangeal joints
- Fibers are transversely orientated fibers that extend around the capsule of the metatarsophalangeal joint
- May be absent at the first metatarsophalangeal joint
- Extend around the toes to blend on the plantar aspect with the deep transverse metatarsal ligaments
Distal Aspect
- Sometimes termed extensor wing or hood[4]
- Formed by obliquely oriented fibers
- Distally, the extensor expansion of foot divides into three bands near the Interphalangeal Joints of the Foot
- One central band that attaches to the base of the middle phalanx
- Two collateral bands that attach to the distal phalanx
Clinical Significance
- Needs to be updated
