Fabellofibular Ligament
Description

Name
- Gastrocnemiofibular Ligament
- Fabellofibular Ligament
General
- Ligamentous structure found within the posterolateral corner of the knee
- Functions as a static secondary stabilizer with morphological variance
Gross Anatomy
- Originates on the lateral fabella, descends vertically parallel to lateral collateral ligament
- It converges with the anterior fibers of the lateral head of the gastrocnemius
- It inserts on the fibular styloid process, posterior to the arcuate ligament, biceps femoris tendon and lateral to the popliteofibular ligament
Anatomic Variance
- It can originate from the posterolateral corner of the femoral condyle of no fabella is present[3]
- Considerable variability found in cadaveric and imaging studies[4]
- Presence/thickness inversely related to the presence/thickness of the arcuate ligament
Function
- Reinforces joint capsule of the knee
- Contributes to posterolateral corner
- Restraint to external rotation, varus angulation, posterior translation[5]
