Flip Test of the Back

Purpose

  • Evaluate for the cause of back pain in patients with radicular features

Description

  • The patient is seated on the examination table, legs hanging off
  • They are instructed to keep their back in extension
  • The examiner stabilizes the ipsilateral thigh with one hand
  • And grasps the heel with the other
  • The affected limb is slowly raised, extending the knee
  • Positive test
    • Pain/ radicular features are reproduced
    • The patient leans or "flips" backwards
