- Gluteal surface of the ileum [1]
Insertion
- Greater trochanter
- Gluteal tuberosity between the Adductor Magnus and Vastus Lateralis [1]
Actions
- Extend and externally rotate the thigh
- Steadies the femur
- Supports the trunk when an individual is standing on one leg [2]
Artery
- Inferior gluteal artery
- Superior gluteal artery
Nerve
- Inferior gluteal nerve from the ventral rami of L5, S1 and S2 [3]
Clinical Significance
- Gluteal maximus dysfunction
- Inferior gluteal nerve dysfunction
