- Most superficial of the gluteal muscle group, forms the prominence of the gluteal region
Origin
Insertion
- Greater Trochanter
- Gluteal tuberosity between the Adductor Magnus and Vastus Lateralis [3]
Actions
- Extend and externally rotate the thigh
- Steadies the femur
- Supports the trunk when an individual is standing on one leg [4]

Anatomic Relationships
- Most superficial of all three gluteal muscles
- Deep surface covers: gluteus medius, pelvic bone, proximal hamstring, several lateral rotators
- Deep surface also in contact with trochanteric bursa, ischiofemoral bursa, gluteofemoral bursa
Clinical Significance
- Gluteal maximus dysfunction
- Inferior gluteal nerve dysfunction
- Greater Trochanteric Pain Syndrome
