Name
- Ischiogluteal Bursa
Description
- Synovial bursa composed of a fatty connective tissue capsule filled with synovial fluid
- Located between gluteus maximus, ischial tuberosity
Anatomy
- Located deep to the Gluteus Maximus muscle over the Ischial Tuberosity
- Muscle origination: semimembranosus, semitendinosus, long head of the biceps femoris
- Sciatic Nerve, Posterior Femoral Cutaneous Nerve pass just laterally near the bursa
- Medial to the ischial origin of hamstrings
Biomechanics
- Standing: tuberosity is covered by gluteus maximus
- Sitting: muscle slides up, only fibrous tissue and ischiogluteal bursa between bone and skin[3]
Imaging
- Often difficulty to see on ultrasound or MRI unless it is inflamed
