Lateral patellofemoral ligament[1]

Name

  • Lateral Patellofemoral Ligament (LPFL)
  • Lateral epicondylopatellar ligament

General

  • Poorly understood ligament, precise anatomic ligaments are not well detailed
  • First described by Kaplan in 1962[2]
  • Forms part of the deep transverse layer of the lateral patellar retinaculum
  • Connects the lateral patella to the lateral femoral condyle[3]
  • Plays a role in medial instability of the knee
