- Deep muscle of the back that extends from the lumbar to cervical spine
- Part of the Transversospinales muscle group
Origin
- Sacrum
- Posterior superior iliac spine
- Mammillary process of lumbar vertebrae
- Transverse process of thoracic vertebrae
- Articular process of vertebrae C4-C7
Insertion
- Spinous process (base) of vertebrae C2-L5 (inserts 2-4 levels above the origin)
Actions
- Bilateral: Extension of trunk
- Unilateral: Rotation of trunk to opposite side
- Provides proprioceptive feedback
Vascular Supply
- Occipital Artery (Muscular branches)
- Deep Cervical Artery
- Posterior Intercostal Arteries
- Subcostal Arteries
- Lumbar Arteries
- Sacral Arteries
Innervation
- Spinal nerves C1-L5 (Dorsal Rami)
Clinical Significance
- Chronic Back Pain
- Dysfunction of this muscle (e.g. weakness, atrophy) is one of the more common causes of chronic low back pain
- Mechanical Back Pain
