Mylohyoid Muscle

Morphometric measurements of the mylohyoid muscle. 1, length of the origin of the muscle; 2, length of the median raphe; 3, length of the insertion on the hyoid bone; 4, length of the lateral border of the muscle; and 5, distance between the midpoint of the median raphe (2) and the lateral border (4)[1]

  • Flat paired muscle that forms the floor of the oral cavity
  • Key muscle in swallowing, speaking and chewing

Origin

  • Mylohyoid line of mandible

Insertion

Action

  • Forms floor of oral cavity
  • Elevates hyoid bone and floor of mouth
  • Depresses mandible

Innervation

Vascular Supply

  • Sublingual artery
  • Inferior alveolar artery
  • Submental artery
