Purpose

  • Evaluate for the presence of an upper motor neuron lesion
  • Named after Dr Hermann Oppenheim[2]
  • One of the many babinski-like reflexes

Description

  • The patient is supine
  • The examiner firmly strokes the anterior tibia from just below the patella to the foot
  • Normal reflex
    • Downgoing great toe
  • Abnormal reflex
    • Upgoing great toe

Pathology

  • Upper Motor Neuro Lesion
