Interosseous Membrane of the Leg
(Redirected from Tibiofibular ligaments)
Description

Names
- Interosseous Membrane of the leg
- Interosseous Membrane of the calf
- Middle tibiofibular ligament
- Interosseous ligament
- Tibiofibular Syndesmosis
- Crural Interosseous Membrane
- Tibiofibular Interosseous Membrane
- Interosseous Membrane (Leg)
- Tibia-Fibula Interosseous Membrane
Description
- Strong ligament which connects the fibula and tibia
- Along with the intermuscular septae, divides the leg into compartments
- Serves as an attachment for several deep muscles of the leg and foot
- Broader above than below
- Oval aperature for the top allows passage of the anterior tibial vessels
- Lower part has an opening passge for the anterior peroneal vessels
Composition
- Thin, aponeurotic joint lamina composed of oblique fibers
- For the most part run downward and lateralward
- Some few fibers, however, pass in the opposite direction
Muscle Attachments
- Stabilized by proximal tibiofibular ligaments
- Anterior ligament of fibular head
- Anterior Superior Tibiofibular Ligaments
- Posterior ligament of fibular head
- Posterior Superior Tibiofibular Ligaments
Interosseous Ligament of the Leg
- Defined by the distal fibers of the membrane which play a role in the Distal Tibiofibular Syndesmosis
- Provides stability to the distal tibiofibular joint
Function
- Hold the tibia, fibula together
- Form the mortise into which the talus sits
- Forms component of Distal Tibiofibular Syndesmosis
Clinical Significance
Pathology
- High Ankle Sprain
- Ankle Fracture
- Acute Compartment Syndrome
- Chronic Exertional Compartment Syndrome
- Proximal Fibula Fracture
- Maisonneuve Fracture
- Chronic Ankle Instability
