Cutaneous innervation of the head and neck[2]

Name

  • Transverse Cervical Nerve
  • Superficial cervical nerve
  • Cutaneous cervical nerve
  • Anterior cutaneous cervical nerve of the neck

General

  • Cutaneous sensory branch of the cervical plexus
  • Formed from the anterior rami of spinal nerves C2 and C3

Gross Anatomy

  • Curves from the plexus posteriorly around sternocleidomastoid
  • Perforates the deep cervical fascia and then divides into an ascending and descending branch
  • Ascending branch communicates with the cervical branch of the facial nerve

Sensory Innervation

  • Skin of the anterior neck between the chin and the sternum

Motor Innervation

  • None

Clinical Significance
