Name

  • Anterolateral Ligament (ALL)
  • Mid-third lateral capsular ligament
  • Capsule-osseous layer of the iliotibial band
  • Anterolateral ligament of the knee

General

History

  • First described by French surgeon Paul Segond in 1979[2]

Anatomy

  • Originates on the lateral epicondyle or femoral condyle of the femur, anterior to LCL
  • Fibers are oriented obliquely over the anterolateral aspect of the proximal tibia
  • There are firm attachments to the lateral meniscus
  • Inserts on the anterolateral aspect of the proximal tibia, between gerdys tubercle and tip of the fibular head

Anatomic Variance

  • Present in 33-97% of the population
