Name
- Anterolateral Ligament (ALL)
- Mid-third lateral capsular ligament
- Capsule-osseous layer of the iliotibial band
- Anterolateral ligament of the knee
General
- Ligament on the lateral aspect of the knee, anterior to the fibular collateral ligament
History
- First described by French surgeon Paul Segond in 1979[2]
Anatomy
- Originates on the lateral epicondyle or femoral condyle of the femur, anterior to LCL
- Fibers are oriented obliquely over the anterolateral aspect of the proximal tibia
- There are firm attachments to the lateral meniscus
- Inserts on the anterolateral aspect of the proximal tibia, between gerdys tubercle and tip of the fibular head
Anatomic Variance
- Present in 33-97% of the population
Function
- Stabilizes against medial rotation of the knee, along with the anterior cruciate ligament
Clinical Significance
- Segond Fracture
- Anterolateral Ligament Tear
