Extensor Digitorum Brevis

Description

  • Extends digits 1-4 of foot at the metatarsophalangeal joint
  • Extends digits 2-4 at the interphalangeal joint
  • Some anatomists think it is part of the Extensor Hallucis Brevis muscle

Origin

Extensor digitorum brevis and extensor hallucis brevis illustration
  • Calcaneus (in front of the groove for the peroneus brevis tendon)
  • Interosseous talocalcaneal ligament
  • Stem of the inferior extensor retinaculum

Insertion

  • Digit 1: Dorsal surface of the base of the proximal phalanx
  • Digits 2-4: Lateral side of the tendon of the Extensor Digitorum Longus

Actions

  • Extends digits 1-4 of foot at the metatarsophalangeal joint
  • Extends digits 2-4 at the interphalangeal joint
