  • Interspinales
  • Interspinous Muscles

General

  • Deep muscle of the back
  • Runs in between spinous processes along the vertebrae
  • Often considered absent from the thoracic spine due to variable anatomy
  • Present throughout the entire vertebral column
  • Subsegments
    • Interspinales Cervicis
    • Interspinales Thoracis (commonly underdeveloped or absent)
    • Interspinales Lumborum

Origin

  • Interspinales Cervicis
    • Superior aspect of spinous process of vertebrae C2-C7
  • Interspinales Thoracis (commonly underdeveloped or absent)
    • Superior aspect of spinous process of vertebrae T2, T11, & T12 (varies)
  • Interspinales Lumborum
    • Superior aspect of spinous process of vertebrae L2-L5

Insertion

  • Interspinales Cervicis
    • Inferior aspect of spinous process of vertebrae C1-C6
  • Interspinales Thoracis (commonly underdeveloped or absent)
    • Inferior aspect of spinous process of vertebrae T1, T10, & T11 (varies)
  • Interspinales Lumborum
    • Inferior aspect of spinous process of vertebrae L1-L4

Actions

  • Extension and rotation of the spine
  • Maintain posture

Vascular Supply

  • Cervical
    • Occipital Artery
    • Deep Cervical Artery
    • Transverse Cervical Artery
    • Vertebral Artery
    • Superior Intercostal Artery
    • Posterior Intercostal Arteries
    • Subcostal Arteries
  • Lumbar
    • Lumbar Arteries

Nerve

  • Spinal nerves (Dorsal Rami)
